2012 GOV. OSCAR S. MORENO NATIONAL JUNIORS CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS (final rnd-MINDANAO LEG)

 
     
 

Jan Francis Mirano from Aklan defeated Keith Duval Ibaoc of Cagayan de Oro to capture the title of the boys division of the 2012 Gov. Oscar S. Moreno National Juniors Chess Championships (Mindanao Leg) held from March 29 – 31, 2012 at the Misamis Oriental Provincial Capitol Grounds.

Mirano, a member of the FEU Varsity Team, amassed five points out of a possible six to tie with three others, but took home the championship trophy with a superior tie break.  Kenneth Norman Honculada of Misamis Oriental emerged second while erstwhile leader Lennon Hart Salgados (CDO) took third after drawing his last game with Nueva Vizcaya bet Mc Dominique Lagula.

Rounding up the five qualifiers for the Finals to be held in Tanauan, Batangas on April 23 – 30, are Chester Jason Coquilla (MisOr) who placed 4th and Lagula (5th).

In distaff side, Woman National Master Jedara of Bohol defeated FEU Varsity Teammate Carol Anne Chua (CDO) in the final round to win the Girls Championship trophy. Nikki Erica Yngayo (Davao) defeated Myris Piloton (MisOr) to likewise earn five and a half (5½) points but settled for second after the tie break.  Local bet Bhea Buen Ecal took home the bronze medal after defeating Julie Anne Opema (5th place), who also qualified for the final together with another local bet Alexa Joy Ejem.

The closing ceremonies were held right after the games, with Misamis Oriental Chess Development Foundation President Memen Moreno thanking the participants in behalf of Governor Oscar Moreno.

NCFP President Prospero A. Pichay Jr. expressed his thanks stating “I would like to reiterate my heartfelt gratitude to Gov. Oscar Moreno for his exceptional support in the staging of the Mindanao Leg of these tournaments. The hospitality given to the participants, parents and officials was beyond our expectations. With his assistance we can be assured of the rapid development of chess Mindanao”

Meanwhile, the Visayas Leg of the Age Group and Juniors Championships will be held at the Governor Corazon L. Cabagnot Tourism and Training Center in Kalibo, Aklan from April 7 – 14, 2012.
