The semifinal round of the 2012 National Open chess championship gets underway at 1:00pm on Monday, June 4, 2012.
The 11-round Swiss system competition, divided into men and women's divisions organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) in coordination with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and sponsored by the City Government of Tagaytay, headed by Mayor Abraham (Bambol) Tolentino, will be held at the PSC canteen, Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Vito Cruz, Manila.
Seeing action in the event which will also select the members of the Philippine men and women's teams to play in the 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey in August, are the seeded titled players, namely International Masters, FIDE Masters and National Masters together with the qualifiers from the elimination tournaments conducted by NCFP. Also eligible to participate are all Filipino chess players rated by the World Chess Organization (FIDE).
A total of fourteen (14) chess players, 6 men and 8 women, will advance to the grand finals to join the twelve Filipino grandmasters and six top woman players from last year's national championship.
