SOME of the country’s top chess players compete in the semifinal round of the 2012 National Open Chess Championship beginning on Monday at the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) canteen in Vito Cruz, Manila.
A total of 14 players – six men and eight women – will advance to the grand finals, which will determine the composition of Team Philippines competing in the 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey.
Waiting them in the grand finals are the 12 Filipino grandmasters and six top woman players from last year’s national championship.
The 11-round Swiss System competition is organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) in coordination with the PSC and sponsored by the City Government of Tagaytay headed by Mayor Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino.
Seeing action in the event are the seeded titled players together with the qualifiers from the elimination tournaments conducted by the NCFP. Also eligible to participate are all Filipino chess players rated by the World Chess Organization (FIDE).
