Garcia, San Diego leads National Age Group Chess Grand Finals

TAGUIG CITY – International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia and Woman FIDE Master Marie Antoinette San Diego spark the Boys and Girls Under-20 division respectively after seven gruelling rounds of the Grand Finals of the 2013 National Age-group Chess Championships held at Taguig City Auditorium yesterday.

Garcia, a chess varsity player of the Ateneo de Manila University posted an early tournament lead by defeating tough opponents composed of Paul Robert Evangelista and Prince Mark Aquino in rounds 2 and 3, a fighting draw with McDominique Lagula in rd. 3 before crushing Neptali Batucan, Jerad Docena, Marc Christian Nazario and Lennon Hart Salgados in successive rounds with six wins and one draw for a total of 13 points, in this round robin tournament organized by National Chess Federation of the Philippines supported by Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, Department of Education, Bayan Muna and hosted by Taguig City.

San Diego, the pride of The First Uniting Christian School in Dasmarinas Cavite on the other hand ripped the entire opposition apart by scoring seven straight wins! Among her round after round victims are: WFM Cherry Ann Mejia, Mikee Charlene Suede, Jean Karen Enriquez, Rose Irene Aldovino, Rowelyn Joy Acedo, Ernali Bayot and Adelaide Joie Lim for a total of fourteen points.

The NCFP is adopting the Pichay-Torre modified match point system which gives two points to the winner, one point for a draw and zero for a loss with a special point (1.5 pts.) given to a player who stalemated his opponent and half point (0.5 pts.) whose king is stalemated.

Other leaders in Boys division include: Paulo Bersamina – 14 pts. (U-16), Daryl Unix Samantila – 12 pts. (U-14), Istraelito Rilloraza – 10 pts. (U-12), Dennis Gutierrez III – 10 pts. (U-10) and Alekhine Nouri – 14 pts. (U-8).
