STA. MARIA, Bulacan---Ricky Echala, Charles Daniel Abuzo and Jamler Luis Uy shared the limelight in the just concluded Sta. Maria Summer Chess Festival here at the Walter Mart Mall on Sunday.
Actually, Echala, Jaime Criste and Mark Rodrigo finished in a three-way tie for first with 6 points in the 1975 and Below Division, but the former (Echala) took the title with a higher tie break points in the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) sanctioned tournament.
Rogelio Esmane, Einnar Reyes, Narcissus Perez and Jan Roldan Oriendo, meantime finished in a four-way tie for fourth with 5.5 points each.
Adjudged category winners with five points each are WIM Catherine Perena (Top Lady), Randy German (Top Sta. Maria), Melecio Nario, (Top Senior) and Bong Farrales (Top Unrated).
In the 18 years old and below division, Abuzo took the title with a superior quotient over fellow 4.5 pointers Normel Benigno de Jesus.
Christian Anthony Flores came third with 4.0 points, followed by fourth to fifth place Lejither Paul Uy and Jose Carlo Castro, who both tallied 3.5 points apiece.
In the 12 years old and below division, Jamler Luis Uy collected six points to captured the crown. John Ruiz Bravo, meantime scored 5.0 points and settling for runner-up place. 3rd to 4th place are Justin Macapuno and Kenn Cabalero who totes 4.5 points each.
National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Chairman/President Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr., Executive Director GM Jayson Gonzales, Sta. Maria Chess Club President Eng'r Norben de Jesus and Sta. Maria Mulawin Lions Club President Arch. Salvador Pinon ushered the opening rites.
