Chess sensation Jerish John Velarde and Joannah Marie Olay sweep all their matches to finish with a clean score at the end of the National age-group chess championships held at Robinson's Place in General Santos city.

Playing black, Velarde uses his favorite King-Pawn Opening to defeat everybody including John Dale Fernandez in the final round to complete his sweep in the Boys under 8 divisions.

Olay on her part played aggressively from the start to the last round to share the spotlight with Velarde. Her latest victim is Ma. Ryna Eureka Anabieza who overlook a simple threat. Olay mated Anabieza's King in 31 moves of the Queen's Gambit opening.

"Masaya ako sa achivement ng anak ko, sana magtuloy tuloy na ito" said her Dad National Master Reggie Olay who acted as her trainer and coach in this 4-day chess event.

Joining Olay in the grand finals is Under 8 second placer Rhea Canino with 4.5 points. Velarde is a lone qualifier in the Boys under 8 sections.

In other result, frontrunner Nephtali Batucan and Exiquila Apao played safe to remain undefeated in their respective divisions. Batucan Halved the point with John Gerard Acedo in just 34 moves of their King's Indian encounter. Apao skillfully transform their Sicilian duel into an opposite-colored Bishops endgame resulting in draw in 45 moves.

The top two players in each group will gain a ticket to the grand finals in April with the exception of Boys under 8 who have only one qualified finalist.
