Asian Indoor Games: Filipina Janelle Mae Frayna inches closer to Incheon medal

 
     
 

WOMAN INTERNATIONAL MASTER (WIM) elect Janelle Mae Frayna of the Philippines inched closer to her dream of winning the coveted medal going to the final round of the 4th Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games 2013 Classical Chess in Incheon, Korea on Wednesday.

The Far Eastern University top player defeated WIM Davletbayeva Madina of Kazakhstan after 48 moves of Gruenfeld defense in the sixth and penultimate round to raise her total 4.5 points in sixth outings, the same output of WGM Irine Kharisma Sukandar of Indonesia and candidate master Kulkarni Bhakti Pradip of India.

Top seed GM Hou Yifan of China defeated WGM Nafisa Muminova of Uzbekistan after 23 moves of Ruy Lopez Opening to remained on top with 5.5 points.

No.2 seed GM Zhao Xue of China split the point with Kulkarni Bhakti Pradip after 122 moves of King's Indian defense to take solo second place with 5 points.

In the seventh and final round, Frayna needed to beat GM Hou Yifan for a possible share of first place and pray that Sukandar will hold GM Zhao Xue into a fighting draw.

The Legaspi City, Albay native Frayna will play the white pieces.

However, WIM Catherine Perena bowed to Bayarjargal Bayarmaa of Mongolia and was stuck at 2.5 points.

In the men's play, GM Mark Paragua subdued IM Nezad Husain Aziz of Qatar after 41 moves of King's Indian defense while GM Oliver Barbosa nipped FM Kojima Shinya of Korea.

Paragua tallied 4 points while Barbosa notch 3.5 points. GM Yu Yangyi of China still on top with 5.5 points followed by GM Ding Liren of China with 5 points.

The country's campaign in the tournament is supported by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC).
