International Master Oliver Dimakiling captured this year's Open section of the Mayor Allen G. Singson Cup – 2013 Candon City Open Chess Championships held at the Candon City civic center Sunday.

Dimakiling, the last man standing after seven grueling rounds halved the point with Fide Master David Elorta to finished with 6 points followed by early leader Hamed Nouri also with 6 points who stunned IM Barlo Nadera by a crushing Queen-sacrifice in the last round.

Top seed Grandmaster John Paul Gomez placed third with a total of 5.5 points via superior tie break points over FM David Elorta who ended up fourth with the same 5.5 pts. Gomez defeated top Candonian and Best Ilocos Surian Chess player Ronald Adaya who in third round shocked FM Joseph Mari Turqueza.

In the Boys under 16, Jasper John Laxamana rule the event with perfect score of 6 points followed by Philip Ian Balbin with 4.5 pts. John Darwin Barcena bagged third placed overall after the tiebreak. He won over a bunch of 4 pointers including Jemima Valdez, Romeo Canino and Jehosapat Lemi. Laxamana beat Barcena in the last round while Balbin drew with Lemi.

In other result, chess wizard Alekhine Nouri outsmarted the much older opposition by topping the Boys under 12 plums with amazing 6 pts. According to his father-trainer FM Hamed, the 7-year old Alekhine, an incoming grade I pupil of FEU-Fern is set to break the record of GM Wesley So who at 14 became the Philippines' and the world's 8th youngest grandmaster in history.

In the final round, Alekhine outplayed Anthonette Dumbrique. Korina Marie Gacula whipped Bryan Michael Valdez and Ivan Lenard Valenzuela trounced Rolly Boy Calindas. Gacula and Valenzuela both with 5 points placed second and third respectively behind Alekhine.

"Nagpapasalamat ako lalung-lalo na sa NCFP sa pamumuno ni chairman Prospero Pichay at sa lahat ng sumusuporta sa anak ko sa kanyang laban sa chess. Sana sa sunod na kampanya namin sa labas ng bansa makuha na namin ang ginto" said his dad FM Hamed who acted as his coach.

The ninth edition of the Candon City Chess Cup is sponsored by the city government of Candon headed by Mayor Allen Singson, supported by Candon City Chess Club (CCCC) led by President Leoncio Balbin Jr. and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.
