PNG: Paragua, Barbosa share lead in Standard chess

 
     
 

MANILA---World Cup bound Filipino Grandmasters (GMs) Mark Paragua and Oliver Barbosa cruised to their second straight wins and shared top spot with 13 others in the Open section of the on-going 2013 POC-PSC Philippine National Games Standard chess competition held at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Main Campus, Sta. Mesa, Manila.

The Quezon City resident Paragua stunned Voltaire Marc Paraguya in the first round then followed it up with another victory against Kritz Albelar after 28 moves of Sicilian defense in the second round.

Barbosa of Taytay, Rizal defeated John Gabriel Tabligan and National Master Stewart Manaog after 51 moves of Dutch defense.

"The first two round is one of the toughest rounds in any tournament. It usually sets the tone of how you're going to perform," said the top seed Paragua, who hold an NCFP rating of 2555.

 
 

"We hope to perform well in this event and gain some NCFP rating points," third-seed Barbosa said for his part, who possessed an NCFP rating of 2513.

Also with bunch of 2.0 points are GM Darwin Laylo, GM Richard Bitoon, IM Richelieu Salcedo III, IM Joel Pimentel, IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia, IM Barlo Nadera, IM elect Mari Joseph Turqueza, FM Haridas Pascua, NM Alcon John Datu, NM Giovannie Mejia, NM Nicomedes Alisangco, Einnar Marc Reyes and Kevin Mirano.

12-time national open champion GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., who is fresh winning the gold medal in the rapid event led the huge group of 1.5 pointers.

WIM Catherine Perena, WIM Bernadette Galas, WNM Jedara Docena and Jerirose Lucero are leading in the women's play. In the junior boys category, Felix Shaun Balbon, Christian Nanola and Diego Abraham Claro also notch their second straight wins in as many round.

Double gold medal winner (champion in the blitz and rapid event) Jean Karen Enriquez of Marikina City is eyeing for her third gold medal in the Standard chess leading in the junior girls category with 2.0 points, the same output of Chessa May Nadera, Michelle Yaon, Adelaide Joie Lim, Ana Margarita Tabol and Jemima Valdez.

NCFP Executive Director GM Jayson Gonzales is the tournament director while International Arbiter Gene Poliarco is the chief arbiter in the said chessfest.
