The 2014 National Open Chess Championships/Battle of Grandmasters reels off Today at 9:00 am at the Athletes’ Dining Hall, PSC Canteen, RMSC, Manila. The tournament is the culmination of a selection process that will compose the Philippine Team which will compete in the World Chess Olympiad 2014 in Tromso, Norway come August.
To see action in this event are the country’s top men and women players led by top seed Grandmaster John Paul Gomez for the open division and Woman International Master Catherine Pereña in the women’s division. GM Gomez takes on Asia’s first Grandmaster Eugene Torre while WIM Pereña battles Gladys Hazel Romero in the first round.
Other matches are: Open division, FM Paulo Bersamina vs. GM Darwin Laylo, GM Richard Bitoon vs. GM Rogelio Barcenilla, IM Joel Pimentel vs. GM Joey Antonio, IM Oliver Dimakiling vs. IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia and NM Roel Abelgas vs. WFM Janelle Mae Frayna.
In the Women’s division, WFM Shania Mae Mendoza is up against WFM Cherry Ann Mejia, WNM Christy Lamiel Bernales against Aurora Kim Dantes, Queenie Lyn Reyes vs. Arvie Lozano, WNM Jean Karen Enriquez vs. Ruth Aubrey De Guzman and WNM Jedara Docena who took the bye.
