ROUND 10 (OPEN)
June 27, 2014

Top seeds Grandmaster John Paul Gomez and Woman International Master Catherine Pereña grab the lead in their respective division after the penultimate round of the 2014 National Chess Championships/Battle of the Grandmasters held Friday at the Athletes’ Dining Hall, PSC Canteen, RMSC, Manila. GM Gomez, in the open division, subdued upset conscious WFM Janelle Mae Frayna in 51 moves of a Gruenfeld Defense 4. Nf3 Bg7 sidelines.

A point behind Gomez with 20 points is GM Eugene Torre who drew his game with GM Darwin Laylo in 32 moves of a Bogo-Indian. Maintaining 3rd place is FIDE Master Paulo Bersamina who dashed the hope of IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia in 46 moves  of a King’s Indian Saemisch with 6th move deviations.  IM Garcia now shares 4th-5th with GM Joey Antonio who made short work of NM Roel Abelgas in 22 moves of a Modern Benoni: Fianchetto Variation.

The drawing GM, Rogelio Barcenilla is at it again, this time drawing, his 9th in 10 games, with IM Oliver Dimakiling in 30 moves of a King’s Indian Classical. GM Richard Bitoon on the other hand, in an Irregular Opening, won beautifully against IM Joel Pimentel in 25 moves. GM Bitoon sacrificed a Knight on the 22nd move then a Queen on the 23rd but won when he captured two more pieces and poised capture another Rook. But the feat is just enough for a share of 9th-10th places with GM Barcenilla.
