2014 National Open Chess Championships / Battle of Grandmasters

 
     
 

ROUND 2 (OPEN)
June 21, 2014

Asia’s first Grandmaster Eugene Torre and two others led after the second round of the 2014 National Open Chess Championships/Battle of Grandmasters held at the Athletes’ Dining Hall, PSC Canteen, RMSC, Manila. GM Torre prevailed over International Master Oliver Dimakiling after 61 moves of a French Defense. He now registers 4.5 points in one win and a draw based on a unique scoring system used in all Battle of the Grandmasters tournament where a winner gets 3 points.

Keeping him company are International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia who trounced National Master Roel Abelgas in 30 moves of an English Opening and FIDE Master Paulo Bersamina who drew with top seed Grandmaster John Paul Gomez in 32 moves of a Nimzo Indian Defense. FM Bersamina upset GM Darwin Laylo in the first round.

WFM Janelle Mae Frayna upset Grandmaster Richard Bitoon in 60 moves of an English Opening, GM Darwin drew with fellow GM Rogelio Antonio Jr. and GM Rogelio Barcenilla drew with IM Joel Pimentel.

 
 
         
         
         
 
 

ROUND 2 (WOMEN)
June 21, 2014

Woman National Master Jean Karen Enriquez maintained a perfect score of 6 points by beating Arvie Lozano of UP in 39 moves of a French Defense. Bunched in second place with four and a half points are Woman FIDE Master Cherry Ann Mejia and Woman National Master Christy Lamiel Bernales who drew their Owen’s Defense game in 32 moves and unheralded Queenie Lyn Reyes who halved the point with Aurora Kim Dantes in 36 moves of a Slav.

Other match results: WFM Shania Mae Mendoza defeated WNM Jedara Docena in 40 moves of a Scandinavian Defense. Ruth Aubrey de Guzman drew with Gladys Hazelle Romero in an anti-sniper game.
