2014 National Open Chess Championships / Battle of Grandmasters

 
     
 

ROUND 3 (OPEN)

Woman FIDE Master Janelle Mae Frayna scored another upset win at the expense of International Master Joel Pimentel to share the lead in the open division with four others after the third round of the 2014 National Chess Championships/Battle of the Grandmasters held Sunday at the Athletes’ Dining Hall, PSC Canteen, RMSC, Manila. WFM Frayna won in 49 moves of a Gruenfeld against IM Pimentel when she gained a quality exchange in the 13th move. She now shares the lead with Asia’s first Grandmaster Eugene Torre, Top seed GM John Paul Gomez, International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia and FIDE Master Paulo Bersamina.

GM Torre smoked the peace pipe with National Master Roel Abelgas in a Bogo Indian Defense while top seed GM Gomez beat fellow GM Darwin Laylo in 74 moves of a Gruenfeld Defense with 4.Nf3 Bg7 sidelines.  IM Garcia drew with GM Richard Bitoon in 30 moves of a Symmetrical English and FM Bersamina drew with International Master Oliver Dimakiling in a King’s Indian Classical with early deviations and 6 h3. Grandmaster Joey Antonio also drew with fellow GM Rogelio Barcenilla in a Scotch Gambit.

 
 
         
         
         
 
 

ROUND 3 (WOMEN)

The women players again showed no mercy to their opponents with no draws recorded for the round, Woman National Master Christy Lamiel Bernales defeated fellow WNM Jedara Docena in a Nimzowitch/French with 3. Nc3 unusual moves. Queenie Lyn Reyes bowed to WFM Cherry Ann Mejia in 34 moves of a double fianchetto/hedgehog game that opens in Symmetrical English. WNM Jean Karen Enriquez demolished Aurora Kim Dantes in 30 moves of a Sicilian Accelerated Dragon with 5 Nc3 sidelines.

Gladys Hazelle Romero was beaten by Arvie Lozano in 28 moves of a Modern Defense Averbakh while Woman International Master Catherine Pereña made short work of Ruth Aubrey de Guzman in 27 moves of a Reti Opening.
