International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia drew with Grandmaster Rogelio Barcenilla in 61 moves in a Panno Variation of the King’s Indian to maintain the lead after the sixth round of the 2014 National Chess Championships/Battle of the Grandmasters held Tuesday at the Athletes’ Dining Hall, PSC Canteen, RMSC, Manila. IM Garcia now has 13.5 points in six rounds of play.
Asia’s first Grandmaster Eugene Torre also maintains second place by drawing with GM Joey Antonio in a QGD by repetition of moves. In third with 12 points are top seed GM John Paul Gomez and FM Paulo Bersamina who draw respectively with GM Richard Bitoon in 50 move of a KID Saemisch and IM Joel Pimentel in a Benko/Volga Gambit.
Grandmaster Darwin Laylo defeated the lone lady participant in the open, WFM Janelle Mae Frayna in a Gruenfeld with unususal third move for White. WFM Frayna was relegated to fifth place with 10.5 points. International Master Oliver Dimakiling also defeated National Master Roel Abelgas in 58 moves in an unusual lines of a Queen’s Pawn game to tie 6-7th places with GM Barcenilla.
