ROUND 7 (OPEN)
June 25, 2014

Top seed Grandmaster John Paul Gomez grabs the lead after beating International Master Joel Pimentel who blundered on the 24th move of a Slav Defense during the seventh round of the 2014 National Chess Championships/Battle of the Grandmasters held Wednesday at the Athletes’ Dining Hall, PSC Canteen, RMSC, Manila.

Asia’s first Grandmaster Eugene Torre also maintains second place by drawing with GM Rogelio Barcenilla in an English Opening with b3 by White. But the sensational win belongs to Woman FIDE Master Janelle Mae Frayna who stopped erstwhile leader IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia in a Symmetrical English vs …g6 employing a double fianchetto. They are now both in third place with 13.5 points in 7 rounds of play.

Grandmaster Darwin Laylo continued his winning ways this time smashing National Master Roel Abelgas in 25 moves of a Gruenfeld Russian System (with 5. Qb3 sidelines). Barging into the win column is Grandmaster Joey Antonio who beat FIDE Master Paulo Bersamina in 33 moves of a Caro-Kann: Advance Variation.
