2014 National Open Chess Championships / Battle of Grandmasters

 
     
 

ROUND 8 (OPEN)

Asia’s first Grandmaster Eugene Torre is now on top after beating Woman FIDE Master Janelle Mae Frayna in the 8th round of the 2014 National Chess Championships/Battle of the Grandmasters held Wednesday at the Athletes’ Dining Hall, PSC Canteen, RMSC, Manila. GM Torre showed mastery in the endgame when he prevailed over Frayna after 48 moves in a Trompovsky Attack. He registers 17 points after eight rounds of play.

Top seed GM John Paul Gomez drew with second seed GM Joey Antonio in 31 moves of a Bogo-Indian to rank second behind Torre. FIDE Master Paulo Bersamina upset GM Rogelio Barcenilla in 92 moves of a Saemisch Panno in the King’s Indian to place third with IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia who drew with GM Darwin Laylo in a Slav Defense Exchange Variation.

Next is Frayna with 13.5 points together with International Master Oliver Dimakiling who defeated fellow IM Joel Pimentel 43 moves of a Sicilian Maroczy Bind. Grandmaster Richard Bitoon beat Natioanal Master Roel Abelgas in 43 moves of a Queen’s Indian.

 
 
         
         
         
 
 

ROUND 8 (WOMEN)
June 25, 2014

Woman National Master Christy Lamiel Bernales continue to show the way after the 8th round of the Women’s Division. She prevailed over Gladys Hazelle Romero after 83 moves of a French Tarrasch, with unusual Black 3rd move to lead with 19.5 points.  In far second with 16.5 points are WIM Catherine Pereña and WFM Cherry Ann Mejia. Pereña beat WFM Shania Mae Mendoza in 50 moves of a Petroff Defense while Mejia drew with Arvie Lozano in 62 moves of a Nimzowitsch/Larsen Opening.

Woman National Master Jedara Docena defeated Ruth Aubrey de Guzman in 31 moves of a French Classical System to rank fourth with 13.5 points. And Queenie Lyn Reyes held to a draw Woman National Master Jean Karen Enriquez in 83 moves of a Closed Catalan with early deviations merging to a Queen’s Indian.
