2014 National Open Chess Championships / Battle of Grandmasters

 
     
 

ROUND 9 (OPEN)

Asia’s first Grandmaster Eugene Torre remains on top after agreeing to a draw with International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia in the 9th round of the 2014 National Chess Championships/Battle of the Grandmasters held Thursday at the Athletes’ Dining Hall, PSC Canteen, RMSC, Manila. GM Torre drew with IM Garcia in 30 moves of an English Opening, just enough number of moves limit for a player to agree to a draw in the tournament.

Half a point behind with 18 points is top seed GM John Paul Gomez who also drew his game with the drawing GM, Rogelio Barcenilla in 31 moves of a Symmetrical English, This is the 8th draw for GM Barcenilla in 9 rounds!

FIDE Master Paulo Bersamina also drew his game with WFM Janelle Mae Frayna after 112 moves of a Symmetrical English vs…g6 4 Bg2 Bg7 5 Nf3 to place 3rd and 5th respectively. IM Garcia is running 4th place.

The only won game registered was that of GM Joey Antonio who “killed” the Modern Defense of IM Oliver Dimakiling in just 31 moves. The match between IM Joel Pimentel and NM Roel Abelgas was a quick draw in 34 moves of a Slav Defense Exchange Variation which ended in under 30 minutes of play.

 
 
         
         
         
 
 

ROUND 9 (WOMEN)

A three way logjam ensued in the Women’s Division when Woman National Master Christy Lamiel Bernales bowed to Woman International Master and top seed Catherine Pereña in a Torre, London and Colle Systems in 37 moves. They are joined in by WFM Cherry Ann Mejia also with 19.5 points and who defeated Aurora Kim Dantes (no relation to Dingdong) in 33 moves of a Queen’s Gambit Accepted 4 e3: sidelines  

Woman National Master Jedara Docena, in fourth, defeated Arvie Lozano in 32 moves in an unusual lines after 1.Nf3 (Reti and KIA). Lozano came in late and was playing all wet due to the heavy rains and thunderstorms during the tournament. She is followed in fifth place with 12 points by WNM Jean Karen Enriquez of National University who drew the bye.

The matches between Gladys Hazelle Romero vs Queenie Lyn Reyes and Ruth Aubrey de Guzman vs WFM Shania Mae Mendoza ended in draws. The first, in 46 moves of a Symmetrical English and the second, in 50 moves of an A48 game, respectively.
