Arianne Pearl Caalim of Naga City and Jerlyn May San Diego of Dasmariñas copped first place in the Girls under 8 and 10 categories, respectively, in the final round of the National Age-Group Chess Championships Grand Finals held at the LeahChar Resort and Leisure Park in San Antonio, Quezon.
Caalim disposed of Florence Gayle Isabedra of San Antonio in 33 moves of a Modern Defense while San Diego, a protégée of the Honorable Elpidio Barzaga Jr. of Cavite, drew her game with Shaina Grace Garcia of Cagayan de Oro City in 45 moves of a Center Counter to edge Checy Aliena Telesforo for top place in the Girls under 10 category. Telesforo settled for second place followed by Alphecca Gonzales of Danao City, Cebu who defeated Althea Nicole Borres of CDO.
The top 3 placers in each category of the tournament will earn the right to represent that category for the country in the 2014 ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships to be held in Macau, China from June 3-12, 2014. The tournament is being hosted by the Municipal Government of San Antonio, Quezon headed by the Honorable Mayor Erick M. Wagan, Vice Mayor Jay S. Vesuño and the Municipal Council.
Mayor Wagan awarded the prizes to the winners assisted by Asia's First Grandmaster Eugene Torre, NCFP Treasurer Red Dumuk and NCFP Executive Director GM Jayson Gonzales.
The winners received cash, trophies, medals, chess clocks, personalized certificates and chess sets with personalized chess boards.
Runner-up of Caalim in the Girls under 8 category is Precious Day Yecla of Kalibo, Aklan and third placer is Casey Manlosa of San Fernando, Pampanga. In the Boys under 10 category, champion is Adrian de Luna of Sta. Barbara, Iloilo followed by Daniel Quizon of Taytay, Rizal in second and Michael Concio Jr. in third who beat Tyrone Dale Yao of Bacolod City in 57 moves of a French Defense. In the Boys under 12, champion is Stephen Rome Pangilinan of Manila, second is Emanuel Van Paler of Tondo, Manila and third is Lee Roi Palma of Siniloan, Laguna; The Girls under 12 champion is Kylen Joy Mordido of Las Piñas City, who defeated Gabrielle Kane Gonzales of Lipa City in 30 moves of an English Opening, second is Jiessel Marino of San Pedro, Laguna followed in third by Holythurs Mariel Pangan of Bacoor, Cavite.
In the under 14 Boys, Darry Bernardo of Angeles City, Pampanga edged John Merill Jacutina of Caloocan City in tie-break to take first place. Third Placer is Aeron Keife Charles Sinining of Escalante City, Neg. Occ.; In the Girls under 14, Bea Mendoza of Baguio City is on top with 11 points. Far second is WFM Allaney Jia Doroy of San Francisco, Agusan Del Sur with 9 points and third place, also with nine points, is Alexis Anne Oseña of San Antonio, Quezon.
Under 16 Boys: First is Rhenzie Kyle Sevillano of Cebu City, Second is Daryl Unix Samantila of Manila who defeated Robin Ignacio also of Manila in 46 moves of a Queen's Pawn. Third is Brylle Gever Vinluan of San Fabian, Pangasinan. In the Girls under 16, champion is Ella Grace Moulic of Davao City who beat Paula Mae Lim of Pateros, Metro Manila in 34 moves of a London System, Second is WFM Shania Mae Mendoza of Sta. Rosa, Laguna who dislodged WFM Samantha Glo Revita of Rosales, Pangasinan in the tie-break to settle in third place.
In the Boys under 18 category, National Master Jerad Docena of Tagbilaran Bohol is first with 11.5 points followed by NM Giovanni Mejia of Binmaley, Pangasinan with 9.5 points and Christian Nañola of Calamba City in third with 7.5 points.
