Rhenzie Kyle Sevillano of Cebu City widens lead in the Boys under 16 category after the tenth round of the National Age-Group Chess Championships Grand Finals held at the LeahChar Resort and Leisure Park in San Antonio, Quezon. Sevillano, a student from University of San Carlos-Basic Education Department prevailed over Ardyin Hijastro of General Santos City in 51 moves of a Four Knights Defense to register nine points in ten games 2.5 points ahead of Daryl Unix Samantila of Manila, Brylle Gever Vinluan of San Fabian, Pangasinan and Jeth Romy Morado of Masbate City.
In the Girls counterpart, Ella Grace Moulic of Davao City beat Monaliza Geronimo of San Antonio, Quezon in 38 moves of a Queen's Pawn Game. Half a point behind her are WFM Samantha Glo Revita of Pangasinan and WFM Shania Mae Mendoza of Sta. Rosa City. WFM Revita outplayed Julie Anne Opema in 42 moves of a King's Indian Defense while WFM Mendoza upended Joertz Gimony of Davao City in 62 moves of a Center Counter Defense.
Woman National Master Jan Jodilyn Fronda of Muntinlupa settled for a draw with Woman FIDE Master Janelle Mae Frayna of Legazpi City in 61 moves of a Benoni Defense to remain on top in the Girls under 20 category followed by WFM Frayna on second and WFM Cherry Ann Mejia on third. WFM Mejia defeated Quinna Louise Soler of Zamboanga City in 64 moves of a Queen's Gambit Accepted. The top three winners in each category in the tournament will earn the right to represent the country in the 2014 ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships to be held in Macau, China from June 3-12, 2014
The ultimate goal of the tournament is to produce the first Woman Grandmaster (WGM) for the Philippines. It is initiated by NCFP Chairman and President Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr. and Sec-Gen Congressman Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino to widen the base of strong Woman players in the country through the grassroots development projects of the Committee headed by Cong. Neri Javier Colmenares.
It is being hosted by the Municipal Government of San Antonio, Quezon headed by the Honorable Mayor Erick M. Wagan, Vice-Mayor Jay S. Vesuño and the Municipal Council.
