Rosa, Laguna continue to shine in the Boys under 10 category of the National Age-Group Chess Championships Grand Finals held at the LeahChar Resort and Leisure Park in San Antonio, Quezon. Both players are strong contenders for the top three slots allotted in each category for the right to represent the country in the 2014 ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships to be held in Macau June 3-12, 2014.
Quizon prevailed over Tyrone Dale Yao of Bacolod City after 49 moves of a King's Indian Defense while Concio checkmated Billy Samuel Ventanilla of Midsayap, North Cotabato in 53 moves of a Caro Kann Defense to remain unbeaten after three rounds of play. In the Girls counterpart Jerlyn Mae San Diego of Dasmariñas City is the solo leader after checkmating Mhage Gerriahlou Sebastian in 50 moves of a Benko Gambit.
In the Boys under 8 category, Robert James Perez of Lipa City and Jerish John Velarde of Lapu-lapu City also remain unbeaten by prevailing over Dwayne Pahaganas of Escalante City in 10 moves of a Bishop's Opening and Del Emerson Dela Cruz of Silang, Cavite in 44 moves of a Queen's Pawn game. In the Girls under 8 Arianne Pearl Caalim of Naga City and Precious Day Yecla of Kalibo, Aklan scored perfect three in three games after beating Ruelle Canino of Cagayan de Oro City and Princess Mae Anne San Diego of Dasmariñas City, respectively.
FIDE Master Paulo Bersamina, a Letran student from Pasay City continue to dominate the Boys under 20 category by trouncing Alvin Acas of Davao City in 21 moves of a Closed Sicilian while in the Girls category WFM Jan Jodilyn Fronda of Muntinlupa City lead her group with two and a half points to show in two wins and a draw. In the under 16 Girls, Samantha Glo Revita of Pangasinan is the solo leader after prevailing in 60 moves over Marife Dela Torre of Dasmariñas City in a London System. In the Boys counterpart Rhenzie Kyle Sevillano of Cebu City is also the solo leader after beating Frenz Adrian Sarabia of Cadiz City in 32 moves of a Petroff Defense.
In the under 14 Girls erstwhile leader Honey Grace Buenafe of Davao City succumbed to Fiona Geeweneth Guirhem of Iloilo City's relentless onslaught after 54 moves of a Guioco Piano.
The event is being hosted by the Municipal Government of San Antonio, Quezon led by the Honorable Mayor Erick M. Wagan, Vice Mayor Jay S. Vesuño and the Municipal Council. It is being organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) in cooperation with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC). Top three winners in each division will earn the right to represent the country in the 2014 ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships to be held in Macau, China on June 3-12, 2014.
