PR4 - 3rd ASEAN JAPFA Chess Championships

Dec 22 -30, 2015 held in GM Utut Adianto Chess School Jakarta, Indonesia

Yesterday, was a Christmas day and  rest day for  the competitors  in the 3rd Asean JAPFA Chess Championships to acknowledge the birth of the Savior. though, our young Filipino players sorely missed  to celebrate Christmas back home  with their families they remain up beat, inspired and motivated especially when NCFP President  Prospero A. Pichay Jr. and NCFP Vice President for Luzon and committee Chairman for grassroots development and promotions Cong. Neri Javier Colmenares  conveyed their greetings and congratulated them for their superb performances through GM jayson Gonzales who is the Coach and Head of the delegation for the  team Philippines.

Indeed, a cheerful occasion and an exhilarating news to know about that our Filipino wood pushers are still on top in the tournament  as 17 year old WFM Shania Mendoza a surprised co-leader in the women's division continuing her tour de force by scoring 4 points out 5 games and compatriot 20  year old Jan Emmanuel Garcia is tied for the leadership in men's division together with 15 year old FM Li Tian Yeoh of Malaysia.

in round 4 Mendoza playing in Black pieces crushed WFM Dita Karenza of Indonesia,  when she over powered the opponent from her relentless attack in their 65 moves French defense face-off and she took  a draw in round 5 against WCM Nur Nabila Hisham Azman of Malaysia, while a resilient 19 year old  WIM Janelle Mae Frayna drew her games in round 4 and round 5 against WCM Azman and WIM Bernadette Galas, respectively,  which relegated her to tie for the 3rd to 4th place together with WIM Chelsie Sihite of Indonesia while 19 year old  WIM Bernadette Galas is tied for 5th to 7th place which she is still remain in contention for the championship as there are 6 games remaining in the tournament.

IM Garcia, had a providential moment of success in round 4 when IM Zaw Htun Wynn declined his draw offer in their 49 moves English Opening Symmetrical Variation and in round 5 a peaceful settlement  against the top seed of the tournament GM Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia, a 12 moves draw of English Defence which leads him to command for the first place in standing after a grueling 5 rounds.

a fateful day happened in round 4 to GM Darwin Laylo as he was unexpectedly defeated after securing a  winning material imbalance wherein his opponent gave up a queen for two minor pieces  in the opening of  their Caro Kann defence  contest. He was upset by an eighteen year old  IM Winshand Cuhendi Sean of Indonesia.

Seventeen year old IM Paulo Bersamina has 5 draws as in many rounds to score 2.5 points out five rounds to land in the cross table tying for the 6th place to 8th place and if he could overcome his drawing tendency and manage to win at least 3 games in the remaining six rounds without any defeat  then there would be a great possibility for him to bounce back  bring home the glory as victor of this momentous event.
