The PSC/Puregold International Chess Challenge reels off Monday, November 16 at the Subic Bay Peninsular Hotel, SBMA, Olongapo City.

The second international event organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) this month was opened by no less than the Chairman of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, Hon. Roberto Garcia, who made the ceremonial moves with the defending champion Grandmaster Anton Demchenko, the 5th seed in this event.

Russian Grandmaster Mikhail Mozharov made short work of IM Paulo Bersamina in 23 moves of a King’s Indian Fianchetto Panno Variation to register the shortest game of the round ending in less than an hour.

But the day belongs to Filipino Chessers who registered upsets one after the other which was started by International Master Manny Senador who demolished IM Lin Chen of China in 35 moves of a Sicilian Morra Gambit. He was followed by IM Joel Pimentel, who defeated Grandmaster Chakkravarthy Deepan of India in 33 moves of an English Opening. The biggest upset was registered by GM Richard Bitoon who,  playing on board two, shocked second seed GM Alexander Zubov of Ukraine defeating him in 48 moves of an English Opening. IM Oliver Dimakiling lives up to his name by beating 6th seed Russian GM Vladimir Belous in 49 moves of a Sicilian Defense game.

Some of the major sponsors beside the PSC are Puregold, Asia United Bank (AUB), Burlington the Socks Authority, Marc Ventures Holdings, Inc. and Marc Ventures Mining and Development  Corporation.
