Round 3 - 2016 National Chess Championships Grand Finals – Battle of the Grandmasters

PSC Athletes' Dining Hall

Second seed Grandmaster Rogelio Antonio Jr. and unheralded John Marvin Miciano hurdled their respective opponents to led the way with four others after the third round of the 2016 National Chess Championships Grand Finals – Battle of the Grandmasters held at the PSC National Athletes' Dining Hall inside the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, Pablo Ocampo Sr. St., Malate, Manila.

GM Antonio showed National Master Emmanuel Emperado the art of combinative chess by offering en prise his Queen, Rook and Knight none of which can be captured without checkmate following or loss of more material. NM Emperado resigned after 32 moves of a Center Counter/Scandinavian Defense. Miciano on the other hand upset National Master Michael Gotel in 60 moves of a French Defense. They shared the lead with four others who drew their respective games.

Notable of the draws were the games of Grandmaster Eugene Torre who was stalemated by FIDE Master Narquinden Reyes in 61 moves of a Slav Defense and Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales who missed the win and then the stalemate in his game against International Master Haridas Pascua in 99 moves of a Gruenfeld. The tournament is using the Torre-Pichay (Bilbao) system of scoring where stalemate is scored differently than the usual draw. The score is 1.5 to 0.5 instead of the usual 1-1.

Aside from GM Antonio, GM Gonzales and Miciano, the other leaders are International Master Paulo Bersamina and National Master Hamed Nouri who drew their game in 51 moves of a Sicilian Alapin variation and International Master Chito Garma who drew with top seed GM John Paul Gomez in 25 moves of a French Defense.

In the women's division Woman International Master Janelle Mae Frayna led the way by defeating WIM Catherine Pereña-Secopito in 31 moves of a Dunst Opening. WIM Beverly Mendoza had it two in a row by beating Allaney Jia Doroy in the second round and WFM Marie Antoinette San Diego in 36 moves of a Slav in the third. WIM Frayna though has a one postponed game with Lozano and goes against WNM Bernales in the 4th round.

The tournament is being organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) and supported financially by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) in cooperation with the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC).
