Round 10 - 2016 National Chess Championships Grand Finals – Battle of the Grandmasters

PSC Athletes' Dining Hall

Second seed Grandmaster Rogelio Antonio Jr. dealt erstwhile leader Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales his first loss to share the lead with two others after 10 rounds of play in the 2016 National Chess Championships Grand Finals – Battle of Grandmasters held at the PSC National Athletes' Dining Hall, Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, Pablo Ocampo Sr. St., Malate, Manila.

Antonio took advantage of Gonzales' inaccuracies in the middle game to win in 52 moves of an Alekhine Defense. He now registers 13 points, the same output of top seed GM John Paul Gomez who drew his game with FIDE Master Narquingden Reyes and International Master Paulo Bersamina who also drew his game with IM Haridas Pascua in a Gruenfeld Defense.

Gonzales is relegated to 6th place as Grandmasters Eugene Torre and Rogelio Barcenilla, who both have 12.5 points, overtook him in the standings due to odd scores obtained in stalemates. The tournament is using the Torre-Pichay system of scoring where a stalemate is given a 75% to 25% ratio score instead of the usual 50-50. Torre was held to a draw by ADMU Coach NM Michael Gotel in 61 moves of a Gruenfeld while Barcenilla won against National Master Emmanuel Emperado in 47 moves of a Bird's Opening.

In the women's division, Woman International Master Janelle Mae Frayna is ahead with 15 points who drew with WIM Jan Jodilyn Fronda in a Nimzo-Indian Defense. Fronda is solo second with 14 points. In third with 13 points is WNM Christy Lamiel Bernales who drew her game with WIM Catherine Pereña-Secopito in 44 moves in a Queen's Pawn Game who is in 4th place with 12 points.

Three players are bunched in 5th-7th places with 11 points: WIM Beverly Mendoza, WFM Marie Antoinette San Diego and WIM Mikee Charlene Suede. Beverly Mendoza defeated WIM Bernadette Galas, San Diego prevailed over Lucelle Bermundo and Suede drew with Allaney Jia Doroy in 41 moves of a Gruenfeld Defense.

The tournament is being organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) and supported financially by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) in cooperation with the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC).
