Round 11 - 2016 National Chess Championships Grand Finals – Battle of the Grandmasters

Top seed Grandmaster John Paul Gomez and second seed GM Rogelio Antonio Jr. defeated separate rivals to led the Battle of Grandmasters – 2016 National Chess Championships Grand Finals held at the PSC National Athletes' Dining Hall, Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, Pablo Ocampo Sr. St., Malate, Manila.

Gomez beat lowly National Master Emmanuel Emperado in 42 moves of a Center Counter / Scandinavian Defense while Antonio, in 43 moves, proceeded to stop youthful John Marvin Miciano in his pet Caro Kann. Both scored 15 points in eleven rounds of play.

One point behind them are Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales and International Master Paulo Bersamina. Gonzales won against IM Chito Garma in 53 moves of a Benoni while Bersamina smoked the peace pipe with GM Rogelio Barcenilla after 29 moves of an English Opening.

Half a point behind are Barcenilla and GM Eugene Torre who was held to a draw by International Master Haridas Pascua in 124 moves of an English Opening. Within striking distance however are Grandmaster Darwin Laylo who defeated FM Narquingden Reyes in 60 moves of a Slav Defense and National Master Hamed Nouri who prevailed over NM Michael Gotel in 71 moves of an unusual line in the King's Indian. Both have 13 points.

In the women's division, Woman International Master Janelle Mae Frayna continued to dominate with 16 points followed by WIM Jan Jodilyn Fronda with 15, both drew their 11th round assignments, with WIM Beverly Mendoza and Lucelle Bermundo respectively. Next in rank with 13 points are WNM Christy Lamiel Bernales and WIM Catherine Pereña-Secopito. Bernales lost to WFM Shania Mae Mendoza while Secopito drew her game with Allaney Jia Doroy in 49 moves of an English Opening.

With 12 points are Beverly Mendoza, WFM Marie Antoinette San Diego and WIM Mikee Charlene Suede. San Diego and Suede drew their game in an Old Indian Defense with delayed Nf3.

The tournament is being organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) and supported financially by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) in cooperation with the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC).
